A Thought From the Word
“And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me. " 2 Kings 2:9
Elisha was the protege of the powerful prophet Elijah. Here Elijah is just on the brink of being carried away to heaven on chariots of fire. About to take the place of such a great man, filling such huge shoes, Elisha asks for a double portion of his spirit.
You and I are like Elisha. We have a calling and task given to us by God. We (hopefully) have his humility to see that we are not sufficient of ourselves to carry this out. We need the power and equipping of God the Holy Spirit to faithfully execute our mission.
Today, perhaps you are aware of your failures and weaknesses as a parent. Maybe you are dreading some task at work or a health problem that looms large in your mind. It could be you feel the burden of of ministering to others, or are presented with an opportunity to share the gospel. It may be just the need for steadfastness in the daily walk. Ask your Heavenly Father for an abundant supply of His Holy Spirit. The same God who centuries ago empowered Elisha can do the same for you.
