David describes what God means to him in Psalm 18:1-2.
Psalm 18:1-2 “I will love thee, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
David was a man who walked close to God and found him a present help in time of trouble. He did not try every other source for help before he turned to God. God was the first one he sought after for help.
“The Lord is my rock”: For believers in our day we identify this rock to be Christ. Psalm 40:2 “He brought me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my foot upon a rock and established my going.”
“And my fortress”: There is no enemy that is able to penetrate this fortress and destroy those who are safely housed there.
“And my deliverer”: The enemy may lie in wait to defeat God’s redeemed, but God will bring deliverance. God will never surrender one of his children to the enemy of their soul. God knows where the enemy lies in wait and how to defeat him.
“My God”: He is not one of many gods that David worships, but he is the only true and living God that David claims as his. The God who saves from sin is also able to bring out of the grave of death.
“My strength”: He is not just a source of strength, but David said, He is “my strength”. Paul said in Phil 4:13; “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
“In whom I will trust”: God had proven to David over and over that he could be trusted. God is the all-sufficient supply for his people.
“My buckler”: David declares that God is his shield that protects and defends him against his enemies and shields him from the fiery darts of Satan.
“And the horn of my salvation”: God is the strength of one’s salvation. Jesus said; “and I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father which gave them me, is greater than all, and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father’s hand.” John 10:28-29
“And my high tower”: This is a strong hold that is out of reach of the enemy. When the enemy approaches God’s child, God is the high tower that he must retreat into for safety.
David has described, in this short verse, what God means to him. He then continues in the psalm to enlarge upon its meaning.
David begins the psalm with “I will love thee, O Lord”. It is honoring to God for believers, who know the Lord, to respond in love to Him. For one to say I know God, but fail to display love, shows their knowledge to be defective. I John 5:3 reads; “For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments”. This is how a person demonstrates his love for God. Words may be easy to say, but actions give love a reality.
In II Corinthians 3:2 Paul writes; “Ye are our epistle written in our heart, known and read of all men”. The saints in the church in Corinth were a message written upon the heart of Paul. They were also an epistle that was known and read of all men. The members of Collierville Church are also an epistle. When others read this epistle, what message will they discover about us?
If you were going to describe what God means to you, where would you begin and what message would you send out to others?
