“And ye went over Jordan, and came unto Jericho: and the men of Jericho fought against you, the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Girghashites, the Hivites, and Jebusites; and I delivered them into your hand.” Joshua 24:11
This verse is just a sampling of much of the same from this chapter. It is part of Joshua's stirring message from God to Israel just before this great leader's death. It is the history of God taking Abraham and making from him a nation that He delivered from Egyptian slavery, carried through 40 years in the wilderness to victory after victory in conquering the Promised Land. Over and over again in this chapter God uses the personal pronoun, “I delivered”, “I plagued Egypt”, “I have given you a land.”
What do we learn from this? The battle is the Lord's. Every victory, success, blessing large or small, is ultimately traced back to the hand of God. Have your children become followers of Christ? Have you overcome sinful habits that once ruled you? Have you been successful in your work? Have your sermons transformed lives? Success in these areas (and the list could go on and on) all must be traced back to hand of God.
To be Biblically balanced, let us remember that God still required Israel to get their swords and bows and actually go fight battles. There is work for you and I to do...lots of diligent, disciplined work. But, remember that our efforts are not sufficient. Worship God for victories. Work hard in present challenges. But, frequently as you work, look up to Heaven and openly tell the Lord how dependent you are on Him for victory.
