A Thought From the Word

A Thought From the Word

And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel when thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.” Judges 8:27

This verse just doesn't seem to fit Gideon. When we think of him, we think of a man of faith used mightily by God to destroy Israel's oppressors with an army of only 300. He is listed in the Hebrews 11 chapter where the Holy Spirit highlights examples of faith. What can we learn from what happened here?

  1. Godly men, even those whose faithfulness we desire to emulate, are still sinful men.

  2. Past success, even great success like Gideon's, is no reason to let our spiritual guard down. We are still fallen and Satan still desires our demise. Therefore, never quit diligently seeking Christ daily. Like Paul, run with passion and vigor all the way to the finish line. And, be humble, recognizing your susceptibility to sin and daily need of grace.

  3. Praise God for giving His Son, Jesus Christ! Gideon was a remarkable man, who did great things in God's kingdom. However, Gideon, like Abraham, Moses, David, Paul and Peter was still a flawed, imperfect man. His obedience fell short. Unlike all those heroes, Jesus Christ came and did it perfectly! He lived a life 100% consecrated to God's glory...this perfect life God has credited to the account of His people.

  4. Cry out for “grace, grace and more grace.” Grace to be faithful, obey God's word and repent when we've fallen. If we have any snares in our lives today, God is a God of hope calling us to repent and seek His wisdom and help.
