Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 16:22

“Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly.” Proverbs 16:22

The picture presented in this passage is something that is constant. It is not intermittent. It doesn’t stop flowing. It is a wellspring. Unlike water that comes from rain, a wellspring continually flows because its source is deep within the earth, where vast pools of water are sheltered from contaminants and from the evaporating rays of the sun. Because of these properties, one can fully rely on a wellspring. There is no need to study the unpredictable forecast to hope that rain might come to water your garden and meet your needs.

Wisdom, understanding, discretion – these words hopefully describe your desire. As life becomes more complicated and needs become more obvious, you begin to recognize the essential blessing that wisdom is. The great truth of this passage is that wisdom does not have to be as fleeting or unpredictable as a summer rain. Wisdom is never found in listening to our inner voice or following our heart. Why? Because our hearts are deceitful, unpredictable, and tend toward folly. Our inner wisdom is an expression of how much sleep we did or didn’t get, how happy or despondent our mood is at the moment, and a million other unpredictable things. The heart that turns from reliance on self to utter dependence on God find something far different, far more predictable, and far better. They find a wellspring of life. God is constant, not subject to contamination, decay, or mood swings. His wisdom is infinite and yet approachable for finite, needy people. His wisdom is vast yet it is also available in bite-sized, clear, and applicable pieces. If this sounds wonderful to you but you are not sure how to find this wellspring for today’s needs, I would recommend two things to start with. First, spend time with God today, thanking Him for His abundant wisdom and confessing your need and desire to for it. Secondly, pick one area which has become difficult, for which you lack wisdom. Take that issue to the word of God and begin to look for guidance. Be prepared to accept whatever you find. You will find it to be a wellspring of life and blessing.
