Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 16:21

“The wise in heart shall be called prudent: and the sweetness of the lips increaseth learning.” Proverbs 16:21

Today, we will consider another one of the results of wisdom. Those who make a habit of wise living will have the reputation of understanding what is right: and pleasant words make people want to learn more. One of the results of wisdom is that it opens up doors, giving you opportunities to serve. This observation reveals to us that God does not call us to grow in wisdom so we can elevate ourselves over those who are less wise. Rather, He calls us to get wisdom, in one sense, so that we can build up the lives of others (Eph.4:11-16). The second result of wisdom found in our text, is that it equips you to serve. A wise individual know how to speak to people in such a way that they want to learn more wisdom themselves. This doesn’t mean that a wise man will always try to stay positive or avoid difficult times, when correction is appropriate. Those who are wise do not water down the truth in order to preserve the hearer’s feelings. While wisdom will never intentionally wound someone emotionally, it is also not bound by the fear of what others will think; to the degree that man’s feelings become bigger than God’s precepts. The balance here is “speaking the truth in love”. Wisdom knows that difficult rebukes must happen in the context of a loving relationship. May we strive to grow in wisdom, that we might be used to help others do the same.
