This portion of Proverbs focuses on the power of words. In this passage, words are compared to the purest part of honey, the honeycomb. Honey enhances the breakfast experience. It takes a dry biscuit and forms a delicacy. But it doesn’t provide delight. It also has medicinal value. It promotes vitality to the healthy and healing to the infirm. Good health is characterized both by preventive measures to avoid sickness and effective treatment when illness occurs. In the last verse, Solomon traces the path of words back to the heart. A pure heart produces wise words. A polluted heart produces polluted words. Linking these two verses together, we learn this: You are either a part of the problem, or a part of the solution. What a thought! God has called you today to be a part of somebody’s solution, to promote health and sweetness to their souls. To the healthy, your words can be a part of the prevention of encroaching bacteria by speaking of the beauty of God. To the sick, your words can bring conviction, instruction, and hope. But you cannot do this alone. Your heart must be tuned to the voice of the Master. He will instruct you by His Spirit through His word to drop words like honey.
