by Louis Sacran “He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he.” Proverbs 16:20
Today, as we continue to look in Proverbs, which is constantly heralding wisdom, we come to a verse that could almost be a summary of the entire book. The first part of the text speaks of finding good, or being glad. If this were a math problem, it might look like this:
Life Situation + Wise Response = Goodness/Gladness.
The first thing we ought to address is the matter of wisdom. How do you know if you’ve handled a matter wisely? To be wise, is to listen to instruction. So, if we are going to be wise in our everyday living, we are going to listen to God’s word and apply it to our lives. In short, those who live wisely, obey God. It is important to realize, that finding good or being glad may not come immediately after you handle something with wisdom. However, the end result of wise living will always be goodness and gladness in the life of the believer. If we were to look at our equation in light of this fact, it might look like this:
Life Situation + Wise response =______________________________Goodness/Gladness.
The last half of the verse gives us the root of wise living; trusting God. The foundation of wise living is trusting God over your own judgment. This can be difficult when we find ourselves in a situation in which God is calling us to do something difficult or uncomfortable. However, when we sacrifice our comfort for God’s glory, we will find goodness and gladness as the result. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not put confidence in your own understanding.
