“Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.” Proverbs 16:19

This verse follows the warning that pride always leads to destruction. Here Solomon will get a little more specific about pride manifesting itself in our lives. He says that if you find yourself with less money than you would prefer (poor is what the verse is actually indicating), it is better to respond through humility, by working as hard as you can to legitimately make more, and or working to find contentment in the providential circumstances in which you find yourself. This is contrasted with a proud spirit that says “I deserve more”, and goes out to unlawfully take someone else’s possessions. The point of the passage is humility is better than pride. The test of the passage is whether or not you are humble enough to allow God to provide for you through legitimate means, without taking matters into your own hands in an unlawful way. We find ourselves in tax season, which provides a good opportunity for us to know our hearts in this area. While there are many good and convincing arguments concerning taxes and the unfair policies that surround them, we do not have to wonder what God’s will is for us in this area; “Render to Caesar that which is Caesars” (Mark 12:17). Will you practice humility in your finances, or in rebellion will you take that which is unlawful in the sight of God?
