“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18
As we look at the plain teaching of the Word today, we have a simple, yet powerful truth to consider. Solomon points us to the luring sin of pride, and then takes us behind the curtain, as it were, to let us see what is waiting on us if we choose to believe its lies. Pride is that little voice inside our head that constantly whispers:
“You know better”
“You deserve this”
“You should have more”
“You don’t have to put up with that”
“The rules don’t apply to you”
“Has God really said…”
You get the point. The truth about every one of these statements is that they will lead us to destruction. Some scoff at this idea and point to obvious cases of people who are full of pride and yet seem to prosper. If you think of pride like a bomb, which immediately destroys that which it comes into contact with, you have the wrong idea. Pride is like a small chisel that chips away at you piece by piece. It is likely that you will not notice it’s presence until major damage has already been done. There is only one way to fight the enemy of pride; humility. We grow in humility as we make God’s agenda our agenda. We grow in humility as we invest our concerns and energies in the lives of others rather than solely on ourselves. May we make a strong effort to live lives that fight pride through the pursuit of humility.
