Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 16:11

“A just weight and balance are the LORD'S: all the weights of the bag are his work.” Proverbs 16:11

Today we come to a verse that points us to the fact that God wants honesty and justice to be a part of our everyday life. To begin with, our verse simply means that justice was God’s idea. We would have no concept of justice or enjoy its benefits were it not for the mercies of God (Lev.19:35). This being said, it is very easy for us to think of ourselves as being just and honest because we do not regularly rob banks or steal cars. But, as God introduces the idea of justice, He puts it in the context of everyday, mundane moments. We providentially find ourselves in tax season as I write this devotion. I want to challenge you to make filing your tax documents this year an act of worship that is acceptable to God.

The root of injustice is a lack of contentment. Since we do not have what we want, we take someone else’s resources and use them as if they were ours. Behind this type of attitude is a small hidden voice that says “God, in your sovereignty, you have failed to be as good to me as you should have been” When this becomes our attitude, the next logical step is for us to set ourselves up as sovereign, and take what we want. So, how do we cultivate a spirit of honesty in our everyday lives? The more consumed we become with giving thanks for what we have, the less consumed we are with obsessing over what we want. I would encourage you today to actively give thanks for all of the mundane blessings (oxymoron) that go unnoticed in your everyday life.
