Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 16:10

"A divine sentence is in the lips of the king: his mouth transgresseth not in judgment." Proverbs 16:10

This is a passage can be a little difficult to apply at first glance. It seems as through Solomon is simply making a statement (and a farfetched one at that). It would be a mistake to walk away from this passage with the idea that every sentence a king decrees is inspired (breathed out) by God, and that it is impossible for him to make a wrong decision. To the contrary, it seems as though Solomon is trying to place the burden of responsibility on the shoulders of those who would be king (his sons) by letting them know that as they speak, the people under their authority will treat their words as if they were a divine sentence. With that in mind, the second half would be a plea that the king’s mouth should not render unfair judgment.

Since there are no kings reading this devotion today, what do we do with a verse like this? I want to encourage you to apply it to your life as if you were a king (or queen), because when it comes to those who are under your leadership and authority, you are. This is a call to take seriously the responsibility that God has given you to rule over and influence those who are under your care. What you say matters, and God is calling you this morning to acknowledge that, and turn to Him for wisdom.
