“Commit thy works unto the Lord: and thy thoughts shall be established.” Proverbs 16:3

Quietness of heart, peace of mind, confidence, sense of purpose, being established – these are some of the most sought after yet elusive states of being. We mistakenly think that these are only achieved after a series of life events have transpired in the way we envisioned they would happen. After I marry the person who always meets my needs, after I have healthy, brilliant, and beautiful children, after I am appreciated and promoted by my employer… The problem with this list is that the list is never-ending. As we reach new phases of life, there is always something out there that we do not yet have that we must attain in order to be established. Therefore, quietness of heart remains forever elusive. Solomon presents a different path, one that is real, one that is not elusive. Commit thy works unto the Lord. Commit in this passage means to roll, as in “roll away.” Roll away your dreams, roll away your desires, roll away your burdens, roll away your life. Roll them onto God. Trust that His ways are better than your ways, His purposes are better than your dreams, His provisions are better than your perceived needs. As he faced certain death, Paul was confident, established, and at peace. Why? “I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed unto Him against that day.” He had rolled his life away from himself and on to God. He was confident that God would keep him better than Paul could keep himself. What are you carrying today that leaves you disquieted?
