"All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the LORD weigheth the spirits." Proverbs 16:2

This passage gives us insight into the fact that we can always find a way to justify ourselves and our actions. Many times we can even convince others that our sinful behaviors either couldn’t be helped, or were necessary at the time due to the circumstances. Solomon was a man who would have been very familiar with this type of self-justification. As the man that God blessed with more wisdom than any other man, perhaps it was the last part of this passage that Solomon chose to forget or ignore all together. While we might convince ourselves or even others of our just cause in doing what we do, God weighs our motives. The one who searches the heart, looks into your heart, and is well aware as to why you do what you do. Don’t you wish there was a way for you to see your motives the way God sees them? God in His grace has given us His word along with His Spirit to do just that. The book of James calls the Word a mirror that we can look into, Hebrews calls it a sword that exposes and analyzes who and what we are. As you read the bible, you might consider praying along with the Psalmist: “Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.(Psalm 139:23-24)
