“The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.” Proverbs 15:31
“How can I be sure that I won’t fall into sin in the future?” I remember being asked this question, and it is a good question. The weakness of our flesh, the crafty, insidious assaults of Satan, the shock of seeing others fall – all of these may lead us to quake in fear. Another way to ask the same question would be: “How can I abide among the wise?” The truth is you do not need to fear. You can be confident that you will not fall into sin, that you will abide among the wise. Does this seem arrogant, foolish? It is not if we embrace the rest of this verse. The ear that heareth the reproof of life will not fall, will abide among the wise. Here are a few qualities of those who hear the reproof of life:
Humility – the desire for holiness coupled with the recognition that I am not holy makes me open to criticism and correction.
Seeking of counsel – Humility recognizes that I do not have intrinsic wisdom so I seek it.
Observes and learns from others – This is really just a learner’s spirit.
Meditates on the word – This is a recognition of the value of the preached and written word as proceeding from God. Because it is life, I will not let the word slip through my hands.
