Recently, I had the privilege of listening in on a conversation. One of the participants was discussing Ephesians 1-“the hope of his calling, the riches of the glory of His inheritance, the exceeding greatness of His power to us…” As I listened, my mind began to be filled with joy, peace, and hope. The remarkable thing about this was that the setting of the conversation was discouraging. It was in the midst of a conversation about the very real pain and consequences and struggle with sin. The setting was not unusual; it is where we live every day. Even creation groans to live in our world. We are constantly assaulted with temptations from within and sadness without. But a good report makes the bones fat. Good news is powerful. Good news gives hope to the hopeless, strength to the weak, and light to the blind. Do you want to be an instrument of God to rejoice the heart of others, to facilitate their health? Well, you can’t wait until something obviously good happens, for the stock market to stabilize or crime to decrease. Good news is found solely in the character of God, in the purposes He has for His people, and in the truth and wisdom of Scripture. And good news is dispensed when we devote our moments to meditation in God’s Word. When we have immersed ourselves in God’s Word, it flows from us to others, rejoicing their hearts and making their bones fat.
