What a difference perspective can make in an individual’s life. Our passage once again observes the heart, and gives us a contrast between two mindsets. The first mindset is the one who is afflicted. This is simply the individual who makes a practice of rehearsing all of the woes of life. The individual, who has a merry heart, makes a practice of reflecting on the blessings they have received from the hand of God. The difference here is not circumstances, but where the individual’s choose to focus their thoughts. One individual has a heart of gratitude, the other a heart of grumbling and self-pity.
