“Better is little with the fear of the LORD than great treasure and trouble therewith.” Proverbs 15:16

This passage gives us a wonderful reminder that we need to keep a check over our priorities. The most valuable thing that a human can attain on earth is wisdom. We learn in Proverbs 1:7 that the fear of the Lord is where wisdom is found. When we think about what the fear of the Lord is, it might be helpful to define it as those who take God and His Word seriously. Those who live a life that is characterized by a fear of the Lord are those who are experiencing His grace and mercy on a daily basis. They are striving to store up treasures in heaven, and not on earth. They have chosen to serve God and not mammon. And while they may not have every material possession they want, they are well aware of the fact that they have everything they need.

However, the one who makes material gain a functional god, stores up trouble along with treasure. We are not wired to naturally be content with what we have. If our eye is always focused on something better or something more, by habit, we will be troubled with discontentment. We will convince ourselves that if we just had a nicer car, house, spouse, children, job, vacuum cleaner, or set of golf clubs, we would be happy. The problem with this kind of thinking is that it is false, and leaves us in a constant state of unrest. Only God can satisfy your soul, may we take Him seriously and find our peace in Him.
