"The heart of him that hath understanding seeketh knowledge: but the mouth of fools feedeth on foolishness." Proverbs 15:14

As we look at the heart once again, we should keep in mind that we are referring to an individual’s control center. The heart includes the will, emotions, and thoughts of a person; it is that which drives them to do what they do. In our verse today, the heart of an individual with understanding drives them to pursue knowledge. We find here, that the pursuit of knowledge is a good pursuit. The question I would like to consider is: Why is it good to pursue knowledge? To answer the question, it will be helpful to consider the contrast that Solomon makes. The heart that is pursuing knowledge is contrasted with the fool who feeds on foolishness. When considering a fool, it is always helpful to remember that the fool is blind to the fact that they are a fool. The fool believes himself to be wise and full of knowledge. As he feeds on foolishness, he thinks that he is growing in understanding and wisdom. However, the fool’s problem is that he cannot differentiate between that which is good and that which is foolish. Because of this, our passage says he literally eats up whatever is presented to him. So, back to our question: Why is it good to pursue knowledge? The answer is: You and I are being transformed from a fool who eats up every influence that comes our way, to a person of understanding who can differentiate between good and evil through the knowledge that is transforming our minds. As our thoughts are transformed, so are our hearts. As our hearts are transformed, so are our lives. How will you pursue knowledge today?
