“A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” Proverbs 15:1

How simple and yet profound God’s wisdom is. Stop for a moment and contemplate the ocean of human suffering that could have been avoided if this simple maxim had not been ignored. Untold murders, devastating wars, wrecked homes, lost friendships, broken churches – Have you ever seen the aftermath of a tornado? The sight is breathtaking, but not in a good way like the first glimpse of the Grand Canyon. It leaves a memory that time cannot erase. And to think – this tornado is fully avoidable. Are you not then moved to pursue the practice of answering softly? A soft answer arises from a heart that:

  • Is humble. Whatever is provoking my anger is not nearly as bad as my guilt before God outside of Christ. In the light of Christ’s grace, what need do I have for anger?

  • Pursues peace. Peace with God produces a calmness that sees no profit from strife.

  • Recognizes reality. Most of the time, one thought would dispel anger. “We are on the same team.” Whether speaking of a spouse or a fellow Christian, grievous words usually arise from a mind that is temporarily insane with the idea that the person I am angry with has evil intentions toward me. Yes, evil intentions do exist, but most grievous words are stirred by misunderstanding, poor communication, or thoughtlessness, not something more sinister.
