“The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness.” Proverbs 15:2
In reading Proverbs, it is important to remember that these words of wisdom are not just a compilation of wise sayings collected from unknown authors. They are the musings and reflections of one man, Solomon. In this particular thought, Solomon emphasizes a great truth: With knowledge comes great responsibility. One cannot help but wonder if Solomon was sadly reflecting on his own life as he wrote these words. The unique gift of wisdom and the breathless pursuit of knowledge that characterized his life was in large part wasted because Solomon did not use his knowledge aright. Current society offers unparalleled opportunities to acquire wisdom. Higher education is easily accessible, and nearly any question can be answered through a few clicks of a mouse. Bible programs abound that make Bible study easier than ever. Acquiring knowledge is an accomplishment of some degree. The greater accomplishment is using knowledge well, for the glory of God and for the benefit of others.
