"The evil bow before the good; and the wicked at the gates of the righteous." Proverbs 14:19
From our perspective, it seems like Solomon might have gotten confused when he wrote this statement. On the other hand, we might explain this verse by saying that Solomon is referring to a future reality that will take place during the second coming of Christ. While there is no doubt that the statement above will be true on the last day, it is helpful to keep in mind that much of Solomon’s statements are based on what he has observed. While this is an observation and not a promise, think about Daniel and Nebuchadnezzar. This Pagan king had overthrown and carried off many of God’s people. While Daniel had been removed from his native country and culture, he refused to participate in the evil that was so readily available to him in Babylon. Through a series of events, Proverbs 14:19 comes true in the lives of Nebuchadnezzar and Daniel. This verse isn’t always fulfilled in such a dramatic way; many times it is seen in the small nuances of everyday life. I do not think it is a stretch to say that we can equate good with wisdom and foolishness with evil. This being the case, may we give great effort to grow in wisdom.
