"He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly: and a man of wicked devices is hated." Proverbs 14:17

Doesn’t this seem like a hopeless label? A man who loses his temper is prone to foolishness, and is hated by others. We might think to ourselves that we can’t help it when people make us angry. It may be that your blood begins to boil before you’re even aware of the fact that you are getting angry. However, despite the obvious challenge of dealing with anger, it is possible to control your temper. You may be surprised to hear that the root of your anger is not another person’s foolishness. The root of your anger is pride. It is a false sense that you should not be having to deal with your current circumstances. You see, pride despises God’s sovereignty, when His plans are not what we want. Losing your temper is also a public display of your lack of self-control. Sometimes we tell ourselves that someone has to put so and so in their place, and we justify being overcome with anger by convincing ourselves that the recipient of our words will be better off due to our “courageous honesty”. Isn’t it funny how our pride can take our sinful actions and convince us they are noble?
