“Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.” Proverbs 14:13

The wisdom of Solomon is that he constantly strips away the outer layer of appearances to get to ultimate truth. Here, he exposes the vain attempts sinners make to change their reality. The thought process goes something like this: “I’m not happy. Something is missing from my life. I need to ……” The blank is filled in many different ways. “Have more fun, more me time, get a makeover, get a divorce.” The problem with these attempts is that although they may mask, they never actually work. Even in the midst of the effort to change reality by adding something to life to make it more pleasant, the nagging of conviction never leaves. And in the end, there is only heaviness. There is only the knowledge of a wasted life, a life spent in chasing things that can never satisfy.
