Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 14:12

“There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.” Proverbs 14:12

Many years ago, I qualified for a citywide spelling bee. After hours of preparation, and then progressing through several rounds, I confidently stood at the microphone spelling the assigned word: Imminent. “I-m-m-i-n-e-n-t,” I spoke. I turned to walk back to my chair to await the next round when I word shocking words – “I’m sorry. That was incorrect.” A mixture of rage, shock, and injustice coursed through my veins. I knew I had spelled the word right. I had not left out an m, and I had correctly chosen i instead of e in that one tricky spot. But, alas, the word was not imminent; it was eminent, and my dreams were crushed and dead.

I actually knew that there were two ways to spell that sound, and that the correct spelling depended on the definition. But in the moment, I didn’t think of that. I was so relieved that I had been given a familiar word that my confidence overtook my mind. Isn’t this an apt illustration of this verse? We may have good intentions, and we may even have confidence that we know how to reach our goals. But confidence without all the necessary information becomes arrogance. Arrogance, or pride, leads to death. Are you arrogant? Sometimes arrogance sounds like a child saying “I know, I know” to his parents even before they finish the instruction. Sometimes arrogance is revealed by a decision made without consulting a pastor for advice. Arrogance is also revealed by a lack of regular, consistent meditation on God’s word. Arrogance is found in consulting with advisors who are not sincerely walking with God. Confidence, however, is strength. This confidence comes from knowing the right information while also regularly asking God to direct our ways.
