"The heart knoweth his own bitterness; and a stranger doth not intermeddle with his joy." Proverbs 14:10

The heart of man is fully in tune with the sorrows and grief’s of his soul. There is a sense in which it is true that everyone experiences trials in a different way. This doesn’t mean that there are individuals experiencing strange and unique troubles that are uncommon to humanity. 1Corinthians10:13 speaks clearly to fact that the trials we face are common to man. However, we all come from a different context. We all do not process things the same way, neither do we interpret life circumstances the same way. It is a mistake for us to assume that we know exactly what individuals are going through, even if we have gone through the same circumstance. Two individuals can face the same challenge and have two completely different responses. Where some might be motivated and up to the challenge, others might struggle with anxiety or depression at the presence of a seemingly out of control situation. While some might become angry and irritable, others may shut down and give up on life.

I do not write the previous paragraph to make us comfortable in our sinful reactions to trials. However, I did write it so that we might be patient and gentle with those God would have us serve. My hope is that as we see those who are in distress or grief, we would be motivated by the last part of this verse to pour ourselves into their lives. While we cannot always comprehend the depths of one’s grief, neither can we comprehend the depths of their joy. While this is not a strict exegesis of the passage, the implication to our discussion is that you can be used by God to help walk someone from their road of bitterness, to the paths of joy. With this being said, who will you minister to today?
