"Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favour." Proverbs14:9
What is your attitude toward sin…? Maybe I should ask the question another way. What is your attitude toward your sin? Our verse today deals with how foolishness and wisdom views and deals with personal sin. There are many commentators that translate sin in this passage as “sin offering”. The sin offering was that which God commanded Israel to sacrifice to Him as atonement for their sin guilt. I think it can be helpful to think of it in this way to get the full weight of the verse. The foolish mock… The word mock used in this verse is translated scorner in verse 6. The word indicates that the foolish are proud, arrogant, and un-teachable concerning their sins. They laugh at the idea of a sin offering or restitution toward someone they have sinned against, because they see it as no big deal. The fool laughs at the idea of humility and confession because they refuse to acknowledge their own guilt.
However, among the righteous there is favor. There is favor because there is acknowledgment of personal sin. Not only is there acknowledgment, but confession and repentance before God and man. This happens because wisdom doesn’t ignore or make excuses for sin. Wisdom can take an honest look at self, and in obedience to God acknowledge indwelling sinfulness. Through the humility of confession and repentance fellowship is restored with God and man. What is your attitude toward your sin today?
