"A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies." Proverbs 14:5
This comparison/contrast seems to be common sense, doesn’t it? Those who are faithful or trustworthy will not lie. There is a danger in understanding such a simple principle. The danger lies in the temptation to equate an accurate understanding with accurate living. When we get down to the small areas of our lives, we find that this is a difficult principle to practice consistently. When someone asks us our honest opinion about an area of their lives that is seriously lacking, our tendency is to make the other person comfortable rather than reveal what we actually think. It is difficult to speak honestly to others on a regular basis. We run the risk of criticism, and avoidance. While we should always speak the truth in love, this will not always be received well. However, we must decide to whom and what we will remain faithful. Will we be faithful to tell people what they want to hear, or will we be faithful to honor God and obey His command?
