Everyday Wisdom | Proverbs 13:16

“Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.” Proverbs 13:16

No one enjoys embarrassment, especially when the embarrassing moment exposes a huge lack of forethought. I have more than a few painful memories of such embarrassing episodes that I simply cannot erase. It is instructive to note that each of these moments had something in common. After the deed was done, the thought always arose, “What was I thinking?” The answer to this question reveals the difference between someone who consistently walks in wisdom and someone who reveals themselves to be fools. The answer is always either:

  1. I wasn’t thinking at all, or
  2. I did not think through the ramifications carefully.

The solution to this problem is caution. Caution is the wisdom to think before acting. Caution is the mature perspective that recognizes that actions have consequences. Caution is the Biblical understanding that not every idea is a good one, that not every offering is profitable. Caution is not cowardice, neither is it spineless. Instead, it is the exhibition of self-control, self-discipline, and true Godly wisdom.
