"The thoughts of the righteous are right: but the counsels of the wicked are deceit." Proverbs 12:5

This passage underscores just how much we rely on the grace of God. The thoughts of the wicked turn to deceit because deceit works to their advantage. By nature, we always seek our own advantage. Think about some of the Bible characters in which the response to an opportunity presented made a world of difference.

  • Joseph was offered with illicit pleasure, and he refused.
  • Achan saw a stash of illicit treasure, and he grabbed it.
  • Moses was offered a life of royalty, and he refused.
  • Judas was offered 30 pieces of silver, and he jumped at the opportunity.

What made the difference in the responses to very similar offers? In a word, grace. Grace allowed Joseph and Moses to push away deceitful thought that while providing temporary pleasure, would produce lasting ruin. Judas and Achan, meanwhile, could only see what would satisfy their own cravings. You and I have the same mindset as Judas and Achan by nature. Today, we will be presented with opportunities that will require us to make a choice. Left in our own strength, we will always choose deceit. Have you sought God for grace today to think right?
