The common approach to any opportunity is to begin with this thought: “What’s in it for me?” We open the refrigerator: “What’s in it for me?” While there are some scenarios where this is an appropriate question, a life built on this mindset is a bankrupt life. Sadly, many approach their marriages this way. While everyone desires happiness in marriage, so few find it, and the problem is directly related to a “What’s in it for me?” attitude. Notice this verse does not say “A virtuous woman will be recognized.” Instead, she will be a crown to her husband. The reward is the good her husband will experience. Is this an attractive proposition for you? In fact, let’s remove marriage from the picture. What really motivates you in anything in life? What do you believe will lead to your greatest good? The gospel proclaims that self-focus brings shame. Christ did not look out for His own needs or fulfillment. He sought the well-being of others. This resulted not only in the salvation of a helpless people, but also led to His own exaltation. “Who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross…” Use today as an experiment. Today, approach every opportunity, every conversation with the mindset of serving and blessing others. Their life will be blessed immeasurably, and you will find the fulfillment you long for.
