"A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved." Proverbs 12:3
Louis and I have been writing these devotions from Proverbs for 16 months. In the kind providence of God, today we look at this verse. How rich this promise is today of all days as Solomon compares the relative stability and security of the righteous and the wicked. The sudden changes of life reveal a person’s roots. What appears to be established with a firm foundation crumbles under adversity or tragedy. What do most people consider to be a good foundation? Money? Network of friends? Stable job? Health? While none of these things are evil, the problem with them is that they have no guaranteed staying factor. They can and do vanish. Psalm 73 says that the foundation of the wicked is actually quite slippery. But for those who know Christ, it is altogether different. The branches may be shaken. But the root never moves because we are rooted in One who never changes and who cannot be diminished or compromised by any outside factor. Therefore, we know what is to be perplexed but not in despair. Shaken but not shattered. Rattled but not broken. And as we observed this deep rooting in other saints, we are moved to rejoice and give God thanks for His stability, His sureness, and His faithfulness. Where are your roots? What or whom is your foundation?
