"Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellers there is safety." Proverbs 11:14
We live in a world that is populated with counselors. Whether you like it or not, you are a counselor and you are surrounded by counselors every day. While we live in a culture that has set aside the title of “counselor” for a select group of individuals who are socially-proclaimed professionals, a counselor is simply someone who gives advice. The idea that is communicated through this passage is not that people fall when no one is giving advice, but that people fall when no one is dispensing or receiving godly guidance. The question we are left with today is “Whose advice am I seeking?” Is godliness and Biblical guidance a part of your filter as you process advice and information? Do you exercise Biblical discernment, or are you more concerned with your reputation among friends and peers? We are living in a culture that bombards us with guidance and advice that promises to be compassionate and fair, yet its end is destruction and ruin. The culture would tell us to follow our hearts, setting ourselves up as our own counselors, ignoring anything that does not line up with our own opinions. This is just as dangerous as looking to an ungodly culture. The Word of God alone is the sufficient counselor for the Christian. May we entrust our lives to it and be faithful to its guidance.
