"It is as sport to a fool to do mischief: but a man of understanding hath wisdom." Proverbs 10:23
Isn’t this an interesting observation? Fools have fun acting foolish. For some of you, this verse just helped you make sense out of why your teenager acts the way they do. For others, perhaps you thought of a peer or family member. However, to get the intended application of this verse, I would invite you to look inward.
We all have our own “mischief” that we have a difficult time ignoring. This verse helps us counter the popular idea that you should just follow your heart. The truth about you is that your heart will lead you into thoughts and behaviors that will result in your downfall.
What is the remedy for our foolishness? Understanding. A wise man understands the consequences for enjoying sin for a season. Those who are growing in wisdom understand the devastating effects that “mischief” has on their lives. A wise man will be growing in understanding and applying the word of God to his life. May we be active in avoiding the life of a fool.
