This New Year I took a holiday in Wales. While I was there admiring Snowdonia and the Breacon Beacons. I have been confronted by the handiwork of God. As a stood beneath the rather large looking tor(very large hill) I thought of the verse Psalm 19:1 "The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork." The firmament means here the earth. I grew up in a city, concrete jungles where men have used the intellect God gave them to create leviathans of the city. Not far from my office at London Bridge stands the tallest building in Western Europe, The Shard. Yet all this seemed dwarfed as I looked over God’s creation in Wales, each tree so intricate, each hill and mountain reaching up out of the earth with dips and cliffs and valleys. I wondered at the magnificence of God. An architect is highly lauded for a great bridge or boat, such as the man once voted the second greatest Britain of all time Isambard Kingdom Brunel, a 19th century engineering giant. In creation we have so much more complexity and marvellous beauty. From this I pondered how true its creation is a general revelation that there is a God. It evidences a designer as a building has a designer. The point I came to ponder was, the God who created all this has something to do with me. Oh, the wonder of the grace of God. Further, this Almighty God, though I was a rebel to him a sinner; transgressing his law. He sent his only begotten Son to redeem a people, to be a propitiation for my sin. What condescension God has towards us what mercy. If you are not acquainted with the creator of this world who form all this by the power of his word, isn’t time you did so? He has revealed to his people a book which declares how those who are born again know forgiveness of sins and a right relationship with him, read it! To the believer reading this I would say, do not forget the magnificence of the God we adore, who formed the heavens and the earth. As the hymn writer puts it: “How great is the God we adore, our faithful unchangeable friend, Our faithful unchangeable Friend! His love is as great as His power, And knows neither measure nor end” I will close this blog with a short poem which flows from what I have just written.
The stars without number, he placed there with his hand; By his awesome power, he formed the sky, the land; What almighty power this is? What design and forethought? As a stare across natures fine realms, this designer have I sought; He claims me as he gave me breath, but what have I to him? Nothing but rebellion, ignorance and sin; But lo, there is this book, which tells me of his will; It says there is one who came to seek and save and heal! Christ is this very one, who redeemed us with his blood; That we might not be cast away but reconciled to God; Oh may I praise my maker, when breath is in my lungs; And never forget that hill, that valley, was formed by his mighty arms; The one who created that world, has made my salvation secure; I await the day, when corruption is gone, and I am with him forevermore.
