"Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him; He hath put Him to grief: when Thou shalt make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand." To praise the Lord is to render glory and honor to the Name of our God. It is to magnify the Lord for Who He is, in the trinity of His persons, for all that He is, in His marvelous attributes and for all that He does in His three great works. Creation - He made everything by the word of His power. Providence - He is directing all things to the end He has already appointed. Salvation - Before He made the world, the Lord chose a people unto salvation, gave them to Christ their Surety Who came to live, die and be raised again so that God could justly declare them to be righteous. At the appointed hour, the Spirit sends forth the Truth and quickens the Lord’s chosen ones, granting them repentance toward God and faith in Christ. Consider three questions from our text. 1. What was David’s determination? "I will praise Thee." We have so much for which to praise the Lord. We were blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. Everything required for our salvation was purposed in old eternity. How unspeakably glorious are the blessings of election, predestination, justification, adoption, redemption, reconciliation, regeneration, calling, sanctification, preservation and glorification. And then there are the temporal mercies which, though not to be compared with the spiritual, are, nevertheless, daily tokens of the Lord’s faithfulness. Resolve to do as the Psalmist - "I will praise Thee." 2. How was David determined to praise the Lord? "With my whole heart." The Lord is worthy of whole-hearted praise. Repentance, faith and worship must come from the heart. "And ye shall seek Me, and find Me, when ye shall search for Me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13). Our Lord rebuked the scribes and Pharisees, "Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying, This people draweth nigh unto Me with their mouth, and honoreth Me with their lips; but their heart is far from Me" (Matthew 15:7-8). "God is a Spirit: and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth." (John 4:24). "My son, give Me thine heart" (Proverbs 23:26). 3. Where was David determined to praise the Lord? "Before the gods will I sing praise unto Thee." Israel was surrounded by nations filled with idolaters, worshipers of pagan gods, even as we are. All around us are sincere and zealous people who are deceived by religious error. In the midst of those who honor their worthless deities, resolve like David to worship the Lord from the heart and never compromise His truth. -- Pastor Jim Byrd ************************************************************************** SOVEREIGN GRACE Man’s entire apostasy and death in sin, so that he cannot save himself, and God’s entire supremacy, so that He saves whom He will, are doctrines exceedingly distasteful to human pride. But they are Scriptural. Why was one thief saved and the other lost? "Even so Father for so it seemed good in Thy sight" (Matthew 11:25-27). God was not bound to save the one and He had power enough to have saved the other, and neither could save himself. What made the difference? The Sovereign grace of God! –Horatius Bonar *************************************************************************** SUBSTITUTION AND SATISFACTION These two words sum up the gospel. The Lord Jesus Christ, as the Substitute of His chosen people, rendered complete satisfaction to the law and justice of God by His perfect life and His sin-removing death. The imputation of righteousness to His people was solely dependent upon Christ’s obedience "unto death, even the death of the cross" (Philippians 2:8). His triumphant resurrection declared that the Substitute had satisfied every stipulation the Father laid down for the redemption, reconciliation and justification of His people. -- Pastor Jim Byrd
