Dear Praying Friends:

My apologies - I just sent out the last prayer letter from 18 August - this is up to date.

We do thank you for your faithful prayers!

We have had two good weeks. In terms of health, I have been adjusting to the new beta-blocker, and have had some minor side effects which are settling down. Still skipped beats, but not nearly as many as before. So we are most grateful.

To back up, a week ago Saturday we drove to Colonial Hills Baptist Church in Indianapolis and spent 2 nights in their very comfortable prophet’s chamber. We enjoyed listening to Pastor Chuck Phelps in Sunday school and church, and fellowship around his dinner table with his family. In the evening, we showed the DVD of our work in Suriname and preached. The service seemed to go well. The following morning, we stopped at Widow’s Jar, a ministry run by people from the church which has donated items for missions and missionaries. We were able to find some dresses and blouses for Liz, some ties for me, a new carry-on, communion glasses and a bread tray which will complete the communion set for Sunny Point, and a cell phone which we will start using next year - avoiding having to purchase another.

We then drove to Eaton, Ohio for the week and stayed in the former home of Pastor Fred Hill, which is now a mission house. We were able to catch up on some rest, some extra time eating with Pastor Hill and his wife, and listening to Pastor Hill preach Wednesday night.

On Thursday, we drove to First Baptist Church of Milford, where we became reacquainted with a number of old friends. We were privileged to preach and show the DVD. We had a special treat after the service. Don Melton, who is on staff and an old friend, has befriended a couple from Suriname who live nearby them. They attended the service, and enjoyed so much seeing scenes from Suriname. They have not been back in over 20 years. The husband is a mixture of black and South American Indian, and was raised a Catholic; his wife is Javanese, and as you would expect, was raised a rather nominal Muslim. We had a wonderful time. Not only were we able to speak to them in Sranantongo, but I had the opportunity to present the gospel in great detail. Actually I find it easier in some senses to do so in Sranantongo than in English after all these years in Suriname. Neither made a decision, but they heard clearly, and this reinforced what Br. Melton and his wife had already spoken to them.

Saturday, we drove to Waverly, Ohio to our good friends, Jack and Sandy Hanes, where we spent the weekend. We enjoyed fellowship and a meal with them and other friends, Henry and Ellen Atkinson. The following morning, I taught Sunday school and preached and showed a DVD at Liberty Baptist Church in Chillecothe in the morning service, and then had another excellent service with the DVD and preaching inn the evening at Waverly Baptist Church. We enjoyed a meal with other friends, Ken and Lottie Short after the morning service.

Monday, we drove to Fellowship Baptist Church in Durham, N.C. We will spend the week here in their very comfortable prophet’s chamber and preach Wednesday night as well as show the DVD. Then on Saturday, we will make our way to Fayetteville to preach in two churches on Sunday.

We will ask your continued prayers for the leadership in Suriname. There are a number of things happening which are not totally clear to me, but I pray that the Lord will remain in charge and set things as He wishes.

Praise items:

  1. Good services
  2. Improving response to new medication
  3. Safety in travel

Prayer requests:

  1. Continued safety in driving
  2. Our health and strength for the work
  3. Our spiritual growth
  4. That everything here and in Suriname will be for the glory of God
  5. God’s blessing on our meetings
  6. For the equipment to work properly when teaching - had some problem Sunday

In Him and Content:
Bob & Liz Patton
