Where Has All the Time Gone?

James 4:14

I remember vividly something my father said to me as he lay dying at home in 1996. He said to me five words that I will never forget. “Where has all the time gone?” My parents lived right across the street from an elementary school, and every day as he lay in that hospital bed he heard the children playing on the playground. I can remember him telling me that it only seemed like yesterday that he was a small boy doing the same thing. He was then, 78 years old.

I have since asked myself the same question. “Where has all the time gone?” It seems like only yesterday that I was a small boy playing on the playground. It seems like just a short while ago I graduated from high school. It feels like only yesterday, that my wife and I were married, and even shorter the birth of my children, who are now grown adults. Where has all the time gone? I bet that you who read this will agree that time has passed by us all so quickly.

The apostle tells us that in James 4:14. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. I am amazed at how true James’s words are. But I am amazed even more at what the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy. 1 Timothy 1:15-16 “This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.”

Even though naturally speaking this life seems so short, it becomes even more apparent just how short it is when you consider eternal life. In Christ alone we will live forever with Him in glory. Without Him we will also live forever, but it will be a life of eternal torment, anguish, pain and suffering. (Matt. 25:30)

May we always remember the words of the apostle John, He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. (1 John 5:12)
