THE LORD'S PASSOVER
Exodus 12: 1-14
This is the last night of Israel’s bondage in the land of Egypt. The LORD God, according to his covenant, is delivering the children of Israel who could not deliver themselves. The children of Israel stand as a type of God's spiritual Israel--his chosen--who were born into the bondage of sin with no way to free ourselves. This month would be the new beginning for the children of Israel (Exodus 12: 1, 2.) In the day of grace when Christ enters the heart made new through his blood, it is the new beginning for the believer--all things are made new (2 Corinthians 5:17.)
The Lamb is a Type of Christ (Exodus 12: 3-5)
The Lord Jesus Christ is set before us throughout scripture as “the Lamb of God.” Paul said, "Christ, our Passover, is sacrificed for us" (1 Corinthians 5: 1.) Christ is "the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world" (Revelation 13: 8.) Christ is the Lamb God provided and Christ is God the Lamb (Genesis 22: 8.) John declared Christ to be the Lamb of God (John 1: 29.) Each family partook because every chosen child of God is in the family of God--brothers and sisters. We all live by this same spiritual meat--Christ the Lamb. First, the lamb had to be without blemish. In order to be a fit sacrifice to God for his people, he had to have no sin of his own (1 Peter 1: 19: 18, 19.) The Lord Jesus Christ lived a perfect life as the representative of his people. Secondly, the lamb was a male. The head of the bride is the man. Adam was a male, the federal head and representative of all mankind. Christ Jesus is the husband of his bride, he is the last Adam, the federal head and representative of all those given him of the Father (1 Cor 15: 22.) Eph 5: 23.) Thirdly, the lamb was of the first year. Christ Jesus was slain in the prime of his life, when he was of full strength signifying that He willingly laid down his life (John 10: 18.) Fourthly, the sacrifice was from the sheep or from the goats. The lamb represents Christ who knew no sin. The goat is a picture of Christ being made sin for his people (2 Corinthians 5: 21.)
God Appointed the Hour and Who Would Take Part (Exodus 12: 6.)
First, the lamb was kept until the appointed time. Our Lord laid down his life at the time he appointed. Throughout our Savior's life, "they sought to take him: but no man laid hands on him, because his hour was not yet come. (John 7: 30.) But when the time was come, "And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified" (John 12: 23.) Secondly, just as God foreordained that the congregation of Israel shall kill it, the crucifixion of Christ was carried out by men doing exactly what God had appointed before to be done. Likewise, it was the sin of the whole assembly of God's elect that Christ was crucified. And, it was by God's foreordination that the whole congregation of his elect partakes of the blessings of his death. Nothing, absolutely nothing has ever been out of the control or purpose of our God.
The Blood Applied and Faith (Exodus 12: 7-9)
Christ blood must be shed for each of God's elect, but his blood also must be "enjoined" to each of his elect (Heb 9:14, 19, 20.) By the application of the blood "we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" and "receive the atonement." Verses 8, 9 show an illustration of faith by which we live before God (John 6: 53-57.) First, as Christ bore the fiery wrath of God in the place of his people so the lamb was roasted with fire. Justifying faith lays hold of the Justifier, resting in his accomplished work of justification. Secondly, they ate the lamb with unleavened bread. Leaven is a type of evil. As we believe on Christ, we add nothing of our flesh with the sacrifice of Christ. We partake of Christ in sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5: 7, 8.) Thirdly, they ate it with bitter herbs. Accompanying faith in Christ is bitterness and sorrow of heart, true repentance. Our sin put our Savior on the cross and this is why we mourn our sin (Zech 12: 10.) Thirdly, the lamb was not to be eaten raw, or boiled in water, but as God commanded and all was to be eaten. Believers receive all of Christ, not half-heartedly in our commitment to Christ and his church, not partaking of some truth only (Revelation 3: 15-19.) We are committed to Christ wholly, not in part, not being lukewarm. Verse 11 gives us an example of this zeal. The believer partakes of Christ with our loins “girt about with truth” (Ephesians 6:14), with our feet “shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” (Ephesians 6:15), with the staff of faith in our hands. We redeem the time, partaking of Christ in haste and hastening to that day when we shall leave this Egypt and go home to be with our Lord forever. Here is our motivation, "it is the Lord’s Passover!" Salvation is of the Lord: he chose the Lamb and who would partake of the Lamb, he sent the Lamb and he finished the work, he slew the Lamb and he applies the blood, he preserves us and brings us home. All the glory belongs to him!
I Will Pass Over You (Exodus 12: 12-14)
All the firstborn in the land of Egypt were smitten that night--all died--but those under the blood were passed over because they died in a lamb. Christ the Lamb of God died in place of multitude no man can number that the plague should not be on his children to destroy us. Those who are brought by God to believe on Christ, live and go out free (Romans 8: 1; Ephesians 1: 6-9.) Believers continue to keep the feast until this day through faith "with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth."
God shall pass through once more at the great day of judgment. Only those under the blood of Christ will be saved. If you have not believed on Christ flee to the Lamb, today!
