VERILY I SAY
Matthew 5: 17: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18: For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the only one who ever said, "Verily, I say." He is the only one who could use this word. The word "Verily" means "Amen." It is the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, the God-Man Mediator (Rev 3: 14.)
The Lord Jesus, the Son of God, swears by himself because he can swear by no greater. He is the Lord our Righteousness, the one who has established the law on behalf of the believer. His "Verily I say" is the everlasting covenant which he made with Abraham and which he makes in the hearts of each of his redeemed (Heb 6: 13, 14; Jer 31: 33; Is 65: 16.)
Because God the Father entrusted our Surety with the work of establishing the law to declare God just and the Justifier of all who believe and because Christ entered into covenant to finish the work, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
Isaiah 42:21: The LORD is well pleased for his righteousness' sake; he will magnify the law, and make it honourable.
2 Corinthians 1:20: For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.
Romans 10:4: For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Romans 3:31: Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
THE EVERLASTING COVENANT
(Read Matthew 5: 17, 18)
In order to see the greatness of this word we need to remember that Christ, the Amen, is the beginning of the creation of God (Rev 3: 14.) The covenant of the triune God preceded the creation of anything that was made (Eph 1: 3-12; Jn 1: 1.) Everything that was made was created to bear witness of the glory of Christ's person and the work of redemption which he promised to finish in the eternal covenant of grace (Col 1: 15, 16, 17.)
For example, the Lord Jesus illustrated what he was performing by his death, burial and resurrection using a corn of wheat (Jn 12: 24.) He did not merely see a corn of wheat as a good illustration, but rather, he created the corn of wheat after the pattern of what he before promised to perform in the everlasting covenant. Likewise, the law and the prophets were given to bear witness of the righteousness of God in Christ (Ro 3: 21; Heb 8: 5.)
In the fullness of time, the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us and fulfilled the law on behalf of his people for the glory of God (Jn 1: 14; Gal 4: 4; Heb 10: 10; Ro 3; 26.) Having finished the work, as he sits triumphantly in glory all things are even now upheld by the same Word of his power (Heb 1: 1-3.) So we see the certainty, the necessity, of this sure word of Christ Jesus, "Verily I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled."
The will and purpose of God in this toward the sinner is, "That he who blesseth himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that sweareth in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from mine eyes. For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind" (Isaiah 65: 16, 17. See: 2 Cor 5: 17; Gal 6: 15; 1 Cor 1: 29-31.) When Christ is formed in the heart of a sinner, Christ speaks "Verily I say" then the sinner ceases glorying in his own pretended works of righteousness and begins glorying only in Christ Jesus the Son of God, rejoicing with David, "Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow" (2 Sam 23: 5.)
TAKE GOD AT HIS WORD
One thing we learn as we grow in grace and in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ is that God's word is what we need, and only what we need. We are often tempted by man's wisdom and our own intellect, by the findings of history and biblical research. If we could take all of that out of the way and have only God's word, if God is pleased to reveal the truth in us, we will find that the scriptures are how God makes a man wise unto salvation.
When Christ Jesus says that Jonah was a type of how Christ would rise from the grave, preaching repentance unto the Gentiles manifesting him to be both Lord and Christ then let's spend our time comparing scripture with scripture so as to see the faithfulness of him who was raised again for our justification. Let us heed the word of the Lord rather than the biological possibilities of a man's survival in a fish, how tsunamis may have parted the Red Sea, or the old testament as mere history, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.
The word of the Everlasting Father, King Jesus, the Wise Man is, "My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path" (Pro 2: 1-9.)
Lord, teach us to receive and believe your word of truth.
