THINK NOT
Matthew 5: 17: Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. 18: For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
The Jews pretended to have a high esteem of the law of Moses because the gospel of salvation in Christ was so offensive. The Pharisees and scribes accused Christ of destroying the law of Moses. They were constantly questioning the Lord saying, "Moses said" or "Moses wrote unto us."
When the religious leaders questioned our Lord concerning the law, they chiefly questioned him concerning the law of commandments, the law of blessings and cursing, and the law concerning temple ceremonies. The law which they truly thought they could fulfill. What they missed was that everything written by Moses and the prophets was given to declare the total sinfulness of man and to glorify the person and work of our Lord Jesus Christ in whom is all salvation.
All the word of Moses is the law of God. Jesus is God the Son. The law which Moses wrote is Christ's law. He is the one who gave the law to Moses to give to the people, likewise, the prophets and the psalms. After the Lord rose from the dead, on the road to Emmaus, he preached the gospel and we read:
Luke 24: 27: And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself....44: And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
The Lord Jesus did not come to destroy the law or the prophets but to fulfill. And that he did.
THE LAW
The first five books were written by Moses as it was given him from God. The Lord said he came to fulfill the things written of him and those things began to be written from the garden (Genesis 3: 15, 21; 4: 4; 6: 8; 18:18; Gal 3: 16; Gen 22: 8.) Everything God gave to Moses is God's word, God's law given to declare that salvation is by God's grace, through the obedience of his Son unto death, through the light of the gospel of Christ, through faith alone.
Secondly, concerning the law of commandments given by God through Moses, men divide it into the moral law (the Ten Commandments), the civil law (the blessings and curses which made up the law of the land) and the ceremonial law. But it is one law of the one God. The law contained in commandments set forth the monumental offense of that one transgression Adam committed when he disobeyed God's one command in the garden. The law was given by God to give the knowledge of sin (Ro 3: 19, 20.)
Christ Jesus did not come to destroy his law. God is holy. His law must be upheld, it must be established in righteousness. No sinner could or can establish God's law by his works as it must be honored and established.
Christ fulfilled the law by teaching its true meaning and by his obedience under it. Christ is the preeminent Teacher of his law and of his gospel. He magnified and made honorable the precepts of his law in perfect obedience in nature, thought, word and deed. Christ Jesus answered to the justice of his broken law in perfect obedience on behalf of his people by willingly taking their sins himself, bearing the wrath of God for them. God is just and God is the Justifier because he gave his own Son who justified his people (Gal 4:4.) Also, Christ Jesus fulfilled the ceremonial law in perfect obedience (Heb 10: 1-18.)
This is what God declared that he would perform in the person of his Son in all that Moses wrote beginning in the garden and throughout the first five books of the bible.
THE PROPHETS
The prophets include the psalms. The Lord Jesus said, "all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me."
Isaiah 7: 14: The prophet proclaimed that Christ would be born of a virgin. Micah 5: 2: The prophet proclaimed that the Savior would be born in Bethlehem. Daniel 9: 25: The prophet proclaimed the exact time the Savior would be born. Jeremiah 31: 15: The prophet proclaimed that children would be massacred at the time of his birth (Mt 2: 17, 18.) Isaiah 9: 1, 2: The prophet proclaimed that those who sat in darkness in Galilee would see great light (Mt 4: 14-16.) Zechariah 9: 9: The prophet proclaimed Christ would come into Jeruaselm riding on an ass's colt (John 12: 12-14.) Psalm 41: 9: The prophet declares he would be betrayed by his friend. (Mk 14: 10.) Zechariah 11: 12-13: The prophet proclaimed the Christ would be sold for thirty pieces of silver (Mt 26: 15.) Psalm 27: 12: The prophet proclaims false witnesses would be set up against him (Mt 26: 60-61.)
From his silence when accused, his being smitten and spat upon, his being hated without a cause, men gambling for his coat, his sufferings in place of his people, his being crucified with sinners, his hands and feet being pierced, his being mocked of men, being given gall and vinegar to drink, his mockery, his intercession for his enemies, to his his pierced side, all was all proclaimed by the prophets and all fulfilled by him.
Christ Jesus is the one of whom the law and the prophets bear witness. He did not come to destroy his law or the prophets but he fulfilled all that was written of him. Either sinners have to be willfully ignorant in turning a blind eye of rebellious unbelief or confess that it is so.
Seeing the exact fulfillment of the word of God by Christ, we can be sure that all the promises of God's salvation, toward us who trust him, are yea and Amen in Christ Jesus.
