Mt 10:37 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me.
The sinner who is worthy of Christ is the one who confesses from a new heart that they are altogether unworthy of Christ.
FOR THE NEWBORN BABE IN CHRIST
You are receiving, and shall yet receive, many questions from unbelievers who have heard that you have confessed faith in Christ. Give yourself to reading the word, to listening to the gospel preached and to asking God for Wisdom. An understanding of the word of the Lord is the only way you can properly answer anyone. All men are fools in the natural born condition; in their eyes they are wise and you have been duped. Therefore the Lord says, Proverbs 26: 4: Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. 5: Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. Verse 4 means do not answer an unbeliever in a worldly, fleshly spirit with worldly, fleshly answers or you will be like the fool who only does the same. Sometimes the best answer is no answer at all. Verse 5 is what happened to you when you heard the gospel by God's grace. Through the gospel of Christ the Holy Spirit answered your foolish questions according to Truth and thus saved you from the vanity of your own conceit. Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious (I Peter 1: 1-3.)
The Success of the Gospel
Isaiah 11: 14: But they shall fly upon the shoulders of the Philistines toward the west; they shall spoil them of the east together: they shall lay their hand upon Edom and Moab; and the children of Ammon shall obey them.
"Flying upon the shoulders" may mean these two things (we know these two things are so): first, through the gospel of Christ, the Lord will conquer the hard hearts of his elect scattered throughout the world; secondly, through those the Lord conquers by grace, his gospel will fly like a bird into all parts of the world. Christ's witnesses shall "spoil them" of the east together: they shall "lay their hand" upon those who were once enemies of Christ in their minds by wicked works; and the result always is obedience to Christ. God's elect saved by grace are the spoils, the trophies of victory which Christ shall save out of the hand of the enemy by converting his people through the gospel (Is 5: 26-29.) They shall "lay their hands" signifies the power which the Spirit of Christ exercises in a sinner through the gospel. Romans 1:16: For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17: For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith. Thus the "children" of Ammon "shall obey them." When sinners are born of the Spirit of God the Lord makes the knee bow in faith and obedience to Christ. Because of the new birth which Christ effectually works through the Spirit, through the gospel of sovereign grace, we find such amazing words as these, Psalm 87: 4: I will make mention of Rahab (Egypt) and Babylon to them that know me: behold Philistia, and Tyre, with Ethiopia; this man was born there; 1 Peter 5:13: The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.
Robert Hawker on Job 42: 10-12
Believers in Jesus should never lose sight of God's power, and God's promises. The deepest afflictions are but the seed-time of a joyful harvest. To a child of God, there is no one event of his life but what the Lord is directing that event to good. Jesus is everlastingly pursuing the invariable object of his love concerning them. Doth a kind and affectionate earthly parent constantly pursue, without any departure from that plan, his children's good? Well then may we suppose that Jesus, whose wisdom and whose love are both engaged for this one purpose, is always doing that which shall ultimately accomplish it.
O, Lord, Wake the Dead
By Henry Mahan
Men's hearts are spiritually hard. The world can win a man's heart; gold can win a man's heart; fame and popularity can win a man's heart; but there is not a minister living who can win a man's heart to God. We can reach the eye, the ear, and the head, but not the heart. The poet said:
O, Lord, speak with that voice that wakes the dead, And bid the sinner rise, And make the guilty come to dread, The death that never dies.
