If Self Were To Furnish Comfort
By Charles Spurgeon
If self were to furnish comfort, we should have but poor provender. There is no solid foundation for comfort in such fickle frames as our heart is subject to. It is well to tell the Lord how we feel, and the more plain the confession the better: David talks like a sick child to its mother, and we should learn to imitate him.
Foolish Things
Acts 16: 25: And at midnight Paul and Silas prayed, and sang praises unto God: and the prisoners heard them.
The Lord works his miracles of grace in the most unlikely of places, with the most unlikely people, using what the world considers absolute foolishness.
The rulers and the judges were passed by; the multitude who railed on Paul and Silas were passed by; but out by a riverside upon a small group of women, particularly, Lydia, a seller of purple, God worked a miracle of grace.
In this verse, God begins working a miracle of his grace in a dungeon in a prison. The Lord takes a man who once opposed Christ, his gospel and persecuted all who preached it and uses that very sinner, with that same gospel, to work the same miracle of grace in the heart of one of his chosen children, a jailor. And this is the beginning of the church at Philippi.
May it cause us to rejoice in the following: I Corinthians 1: 27: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28: And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29: That no flesh should glory in his presence.
Natural and Supernatural Causes
Acts 16: 35: And when it was day, the magistrates sent the serjeants, saying, Let those men go.
It would be supposition to say that the earthquake, which occurred the night before, caused the magistrates to have this change of heart. It would be supposition to say that some kind of legal evidence was brought to the magistrate's attention so that they decided Paul and Silas were innocent. It would be supposition to draw any conclusion than the obvious one given. From what is recorded, it is obvious fact that their change of heart was the product of something other than the grace of God working to bring them to confess Christ. That is plain to see by their rejection of Christ's messengers.
Not that the magistrates were claiming to confess Christ, but in them we see the same principles found in a false confession. Natural causes may produce a mere change of heart but a mere change of heart produced by natural causes is not true repentance and faith and therefore results in a false confession.
Repentance and faith is the gift of God through Christ Jesus the Lord and Savior (Acts 5:31; Eph 2; 8, 9.) Therefore when we read: "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation" we understand that all the glory goes to God, who through the blood of his Son our Lord Jesus Christ, has created in us a new heart through the Holy Spirit wherein we are made to confess salvation is of the Lord. (Romans 10:10)
The High Way
Isaiah 11: 15: And the LORD shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod. 16: And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.
The triune God of glory set forth his hand the first time when, as Moses stretched forth his rod over the Red Sea, God stretched forth the rod of justice upon Christ Jesus, the River of Life, the seven streams, the Man who is Seven. By doing so God destroyed the accusing tongue of the king of Egypt by completely drying up the waters of offense on behalf of all God's elect. There is now a HIGH WAY for the remnant of his people--CHRIST THE HIGH WAY! (2 Corinthians 5:21.)
Now, a second time, having received all power in heaven and earth, through the mighty wind of the Holy Spirit the Lord Jesus Christ stretches forth his hand from his majestic throne in glory through the preaching of the gospel, exalting the HIGH WAY, making each of his redeemed go over dry shod through faith in him.
Fools Like Us
The unregenerate man listens to the gospel then arrogantly boasts that he is too wise to be duped into believing such absurdity. He hears the word of the Lord, hears it with the natural ear the Lord gives him, reads it with the natural eye the Lord gives him, then uses the breath the Lord gives him to say, "No, God!" And the natural man calls that wisdom. That is God's definition, not of a wise man, but of a fool. (Psalm 14: 1-4.) Every sinner saved by grace can honestly say, "I was once the fool." But tasting the grace which God showered you with in spite of your conceit, may it move you to poor out your heart to God for those whose boast is yet the depths of ignorance.
