When The Lord was going to Sodom to destroy it He revealed His purpose to Abraham:

"And the Lord said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I KNOW HIM, that he will command his household after him, and they shall KEEP THE WAY OF THE LORD, to do justice and judgment" (Genesis 18:17-19.)

There are two reasons The Lord gives for revealing His purpose to Abraham.

One, He will become a great and mighty nation, all nations will be blessed in him. This was a sure and certain prophecy and promise, God had entered into covenant with Him and his seed. Because of this intimate relationship God wouldn't hide from Abraham His purpose of judgment upon Sodom.

Secondly, He revealed to Him his purpose to destroy Sodom and the cities of the plain, because He knew that Abraham would "TEACH HIS CHILDREN, and they shall KEEP THE WAY OF THE LORD, to do justice and judgment."

God knew that his servant, his elect, the one He had entered into covenant with would teach His children the way Of God. That he would teach them the way of Grace yes, the way of Election yes, the way of salvation by Covenant yes, the way of God's promise of a Savior who would be a man, and yet be God.

But He knew that he also would teach his children of the JUDGMENT of God, of the JUSTICE of God. That where sin is found it must be punished. God knew that Abraham would teach his children that God Almighty would destroy whole cities where sin was rampant. He knew Abraham would use His destruction of Sodom to teach his children.

What a solemn responsibility we who are God's people have towards our children, to teach them of God, to teach them of Gods "way of justice and judgment".

How can we face such an awesome responsibility? The greatest thing we can do for our children is to continually bring them to HEAR THE GOSPEL. If it is not important to us, if it is not our life, neither will it ever mean anything to our children.
