Pleasing God
"That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing." Col. 1:10
The first thoughts most of us have when we read, "walk worthy," or "pleasing the Lord" is I must start living better, or I can't possibly walk in such a way as will please the Lord.
Both are wrong thoughts, they both are based upon works, and a false humility. So preacher how then can I walk in such a way as is pleasing the Lord?
Walk by faith, walk in love, walk in Christ Jesus as ye received Him, walk in wisdom towards them that are without, walk as the children of light, walk not after the flesh, meaning your fallen nature. All of these are scriptural exhortations to us all, thank God we are not left to our selves to decide how we are to walk in this world, God gives us light, his word is our guide, it is a plain path. By his word we can see the pitfalls, the obstacles that we would stumble over.
Pleasing the Lord, what in the world does this mean? Pleasing simply means "a preference of the will of others before your own." Don't you prefer God's will before your own? Don't we pray, "Our Father, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven"?
Haven't you often prayed and pleaded with the Lord, please don't leave me to myself?
Don't leave me to my will, keep my will subject to your will. The reason that the way seems hard many times is, because we prefer our will before His Will.
Who wouldn't prefer the will of the Lord to their will? His will is always right, full of love, goodness, infinite wisdom, it is always for our good, and his glory. Now don't you want to "Please the Lord"?
