How Shall I Know?
John Owen
How shall a man know that his humiliation is evangelical, that his sorrow is according to God? He does not do as Cain did, who cried his sins were greater than he could bear, and so departed from the presence of God; nor as Judas did, who repented, and hanged himself; nor as Felix did, tremble for a while, and then returned to his lusts; nor as the Jews did, in the prophet "pine away under there iniquities," because of vexation of heart; nor doth he devert his thoughts to other things, thereby to relieve his soul in his trouble; nor fix upon a righteousness of his own; nor slothfully lie down under his perplexity; but in the midst of it he applies himself to God in Christ for pardon and mercy. And it is the soul's application unto God for forgiveness, and not its sense of sin, that gives to God the glory of His grace.
Merciful Darkness
Robert Hawker
Darkness is a mercy if it drives me to Jesus the Light. Poverty of soul is true riches if my pinchings endear his enlargements. It is blessed to know, and blessed to feel, all spiritual wants; to make the soul more sensible that there is no fullness but in Jesus.
Peace on Earth
Henry Mahan
Any man or woman who claims continual, uninterrupted joy, rest, and peace in this world is either not telling the truth or has no connection with reality! True joy, rest, and peace are things we enjoy in Christ IN THE MIDST of troubles, afflictions, and infirmities. Paul's exhortation was "rejoice in the Lord." When I am conscious of my weakness, failures, and sins, I rejoice in Christ, my righteousness. When I am concerned about food, clothing, and shelter, I rejoice in Christ my provider. When I am sick, Christ is my healer. When I am grieved, Christ is my comfort. When I am faced with death, Christ is my life! So it is not necessary to put on a false face and deceive others. We are still human, but our peace, rest and joy is CHRIST.
Quote
Henry Mahan
A certain cure for anxious care is TRUST.
An Observation by Matthew Henry
The Lord turned the captivity of Job, not when he prayed for himself, but when he prayed for his friends who had trespassed against him.
Hebrews Chapter 11
Don Fortner is pastor of Grace Baptist Church of Danville, Kentucky.
It is commonly thought that Paul's purpose in writing Hebrews 11 is to extol the greatness of those men and women whose names are mentioned in these verses, or at least to extol the greatness of their faith. Neither is true. Paul's purpose here is to extol the greatness of their God, the Giver and Sustainer of faith. In this chapter the Holy Spirit is encouraging believers, in the midst of great trials, facing great dangers, enduring great opposition, to continue trusting Christ.
Gospel-Hardened
C.H. Spurgeon
It is a horrible thing to think of! The same sun that melts wax, hardens clay; and to some hearts the gospel becomes the savour of death unto death. If nothing comes of this morning's service but making everyone inquire how it is with his own soul, if it shall only constrain you to go to your solitary chamber and shut the door and ask, "O Lord, let me know this glorious gospel; I have not understood it up till now, for it has not been glorious to me. Do make it so to me this day, that I may be saved!" My heart will be very glad if such shall be the case.
Prayer
True prayer exalts God in his absolute sovereignty and abases the supplicant in his absolute dependence.
