The Everlasting One-Way Covenant
(Genesis 15:7-21)

The Lord's promise to the believer is a one way promise. When Abraham asked the Lord how he would know that he would inherit the promises of God, this scripture shows us how God made it known. The Lord commanded Abraham to separate several manners of animals and birds. Then the Lord made a smoking furnace and a lamp pass between these pieces. The Lord did this because it was the custom of the Chaldeans, from where Abraham came.

Chaldean's laid out certain elements then each person making the covenant between each other passed in and out between the items. But notice what Abraham was doing while the smoking furnace and the lamp passed between these things. Abraham was in a deep sleep. The Lord showed Abraham that the way he would know that his promise would come to pass was that the Lord God would perform it himself.

So it is in the new covenant which the Lord makes with his redeemed children when he speaks in their heart. It is because God's covenant is between Father, Son and Holy Spirit and not dependent upon the sinner that God speaks with certainty when he says, I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people (Heb 8: 10.) David was not looking to any promise he had made to the Lord but to the promise the Lord made to him and this was his dying word, " Although my house be not so with God; yet he hath made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things, and sure: for this is all my salvation, and all my desire, although he make it not to grow" (2 Sam 23:5.)
