Warned of God
Hebrews 11: 7: By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith.
The Hebrew brethren had pressure from every side to stop trusting God, to turn from faith in Christ to the works of the law, to the observance of days, months, years and all manner of ceremonialism. Throughout this letter we are encouraged along with them by seeing God's faithfulness toward those who put their trust in him alone. Here we see God's faithfulness toward Noah.
God warned Noah (Gen 6: 5-17.) This should help us understand from whom faith comes? Noah was warned of God, just as Abraham was called of God (v8.), even as Sara was promised by God (v11.) This is important to note because as the Lord clearly declares, "faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom 10:17.)
We are expressly told throughout the Hebrew letter that God's Son, the Lord Jesus Christ is the one by whom God has spoken. Those who attempt to turn the brethren from Christ the Word often do so by turning us to past prophets, as the Judaizers were doing our Hebrew brethren. Not because they heard Christ, of whom every true prophet spake, but merely out of historical, vain, tradition. So the Hebrew letter begins by declaring that though God spake in times past by the prophets, God's very Son is the Word in whom God has spoken to us in these last days (Heb 1:1.) So many things distract lost religious sinners away from the main issue. For example, the Pharisees attempted to turn the Hebrew brethren from Christ the Word to the letter (or word) of the law at Sinai. Yet, by declaring the Son of God preeminently higher than the angels, the Holy Spirit proclaims that it is Christ the Word who gave the law whom we must heed (Heb 2: 1-4.)
No sinner can believe without hearing of him in whom we believe, Christ Jesus the Lord. Apart from Christ there is no promise of salvation for believers. He is the reason the word exists; the one whom every word glorifies, the one in whom all the promises of God are yea and amen! Did Noah hear of Christ the Lord? God declared his work of salvation to Noah when he showed Noah the Ark of his salvation. Noah believed God because God warned Noah. We have been warned of God. We have been shown more clearly than Noah that salvation is in Christ the Ark. Do we believe him?
