True faith has saving efficacy because the God who gives it faithfully fulfills the promises he reveals through it.
TRAVELING TO ANOTHER COUNTRY Don Fortner is pastor of Grace Baptist Church of Danville, Kentucky. Hebrews 11:16 But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
Almost every year I travel to a foreign country preaching the gospel of Christ. I have crossed the borders of our nation north, south, east, and west. Whenever you leave this country and cross into another, three things are required.
(1) You must have a birth certificate to prove your citizenship. (2) You must have a visa from the country receiving you. (3) You must have a clean record, no criminal record.
Soon I will leave this land of sorrow and sin. I hope to enter into the bliss and glory of heaven. I hope to stand forever accepted as a citizen of the New Jerusalem. Here is the basis of my hope.
A BIRTH CERTIFICATE - The Lord God has given me a new nature (2 Cor. 5:17). There is in me a new man, created of God in righteousness and true holiness.
A VISA - I have a right to enter into heaven itself by the blood of Christ, because I am robed in his righteousness. God says, "It must be perfect to be accepted," and in Christ I am perfect! He has made me perfectly righteous before God!
A CLEAR RECORD - Jesus Christ has purged away all my sins with his own precious blood. Therefore God will never charge me with any sin (Rom. 4:8). When I stand before God and he searches the books for iniquity and sin under my name, he will find none (Jer. 50:20). DO YOU HAVE WHAT GOD REQUIRES?
WHAT FAITH EXCLUDES Tim James is pastor of Sequoyah Baptist Church in Cherokee, North Carolina. Faith excludes all things that man might produce. If that were understood then most of what is called "faith ministries" today would not exist. They tell people who are sick that "if you have enough faith you can be made whole." Then when the person is not made whole it is the person's fault and the preacher keeps their money. That is a dirty, filthy, trick played on unsuspecting, needful and needy people. Faith excludes all things, everything, and anything that man might produce.
TRUTH AND LIES The Lord promised Adam, saying, But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die (Genesis 2:17.) Satan told Eve she would live, saying, "For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil" (Genesis 3:5.)
What Satan called life--having our eyes opened, being as gods, knowing good and evil--is exactly what God called death. Therefore, because all mankind died when Adam went the way of the lie, because everyone is born with a wicked heart which believes Satan is true while God is a liar, and because scripture bears out that God has never revealed Truth within the majority in any generation, then believers can almost always be assured that what the multitudes believe, in religion or otherwise, is the opposite of the truth of God.
Charles Spurgeon Matthew 8: 5: And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, 6: And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. One does not often see palsy and acute pain united, but the watchful centurion had marked these symptoms, and he pleads them with Jesus. Not merit, but misery, must be our plea with the Savior.
Don Bell is pastor of Lantana Grace Church in Crossville, Tennessee. Lord, when I read your word, give me understanding of what I read. Give me faith to believe what I read. Give me wisdom to express what I read. Give me grace to live according to what I read.
