Are You Tithing?

Acts 5:4: Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power?

The rebellion of Ananias and Sapphira was aggravated by the fact that they proved they knew nothing about the free salvation of God. Having been freed from the killing letter of the law by Christ Jesus the Lord, believers are not bound by law to give a particular percentage as stated under the covenant of works. Not one place in the New Testament will you find the Apostles using the law to determine how much believers should contribute to the needs of their brethren. Why?

God provides for us through our brethren to show us how Christ provided for us through the sacrifice of himself. Our Lord was not obligated to save anyone by law. He laid down his life willingly. Therefore, God is pleased with the offering of his Son alone. He is pleased with all those who trust that the offering of his own person shall sustain our every need before him.

Being born of the Holy Spirit of grace, believers do not tithe, they give willingly. Contrary to Ananias and Sapphira, Barnabas gave so freely because he had been saved so freely. His heart was gracious toward his brethren because he was born of the Spirit of Christ who lay down his life for him.

But because Ananias and Sapphira were not moved by the power of the Holy Spirit but by an evil desire for the praise of men, they did not understand that they were under no obligation whatsoever. They did not rejoice in the liberty wherewith Christ sets sinners free. They came thinking they were bound to fulfill a legal requirement, thinking if they fulfilled this legal obligation then God would accept them--he did not! Christ alone is the sufficient offering for needy sinners! Only when we believe it will we freely give ourselves to him in faith and to our brethren in love.
